The processes followed is similar to the rest of GCC. One small difference is that the courts can oblige the drawer to pay the value of the cheque as well as the expenses without filing a civil case. (Article 357 of Qatar Law No. 11.2004)

The banks will take the below motioned steps as a process.

  1. Bounce cheque in Qatar.  All the banks as part of their process will present the security cheque. At the time of application most of the banks and their products will make it mandatory for you to provide a cheque.
  2. Criminal case in Qatar. Under Qatari law similar to UAE, Saudi, Oman and Bahrain a cheque bounce is a criminal offence. It is punishable with three years of imprisonment.
  3. Travel ban in Qatar.  Contrary to popular belief  a travel ban can be initiated against you even without depositing the security cheque. Such cases are rare and orders carried out on on selective cases.  Once the cheque is bounced
  4. Civil case in Qatar.  Banks and NBFCs will always have the option of filing a civil case on their defaulters. there are many factors they consider for going forward with a civil case, for example their current financial situation ,  the product, the last payment date, total outstanding, ETC.

What is the punishment for a cheque bounce in Qatar?

Penal Code No. 11 under article 357 a cheque bounce is punishable with 3 months to 3 years of jail time and a minimum fine of 3000 QAR.
